An independent collection · Always taking shape

Open Work.

Making complex things
easier to explore.

Experiments, tools and ideas spanning health data, AI and everyday curiosity.

Some are ready to use. Others are questions taking shape. Follow what interests you.

Find something to explore

Follow your curiosity

A few ways in.

Different subjects. A shared interest in evidence,
useful questions and things you can try.

Readiness beyond the technology

Explore the organisational, technical and trust conditions that make health-data research possible. A common structure for identifying gaps and priorities.

The question, notes & feedback

A question I’m exploringWhich indicator would change an actual improvement decision?

Commissioned by and intellectual property rights owned by Research Data Scotland; originated and developed by OPL Advisory. Further independent validation is required. See the linked framework for evidence, attribution and reuse terms.

The Birthday Calendar · Illustration
Data & curiosityLive experiment

Is there a season for birthdays?

Look up a birthday, follow patterns through the year and explore how birth seasons vary across the four UK nations.

Look up a birthday
The question, notes & feedback

A question I’m exploringWhich pattern surprised you—and what explanation would you want to test?

The daily lookup covers England and Wales. The monthly comparison covers all four UK nations. The explorer explains its sources, periods and gaps; a pattern alone does not establish its cause.

Britele · Illustration
Play & geographyLive experiment

How well do you know your way around?

A daily UK geography game. Take a guess, follow the clues and discover a place you might otherwise have passed by.

Play Britele
The question, notes & feedback

A question I’m exploringWhat did playing help you notice or remember about a place?

A small experiment in learning through play. The game has its own home and daily challenge.

PTF Weather · Illustration
Place & observationLive experiment

What can one weather station reveal?

Explore observations from a local field station in Hoton. An invitation to notice the weather as a changing record of a place.

Explore the observations
The question, notes & feedback

A question I’m exploringWhich view helps you understand the weather here?

This links to the public weather site. Local observations describe conditions at a particular station; consult the project for coverage and data notes.

Questions worth making visible, even while the public version is taking shape.

Anatomy of an Opt Out

How can we make health-data choices easier to understand, including the gaps between policy, evidence and public expectations?

Preparing an edition for this collection.

In development

Local health, in context

What can public data tell us about health and services around a place—and what does it leave unanswered?

Exploring a useful first journey through the data.

The person behind the collection

Hello, I’m David.

I’m interested in how evidence, explanation and practical tools can help us understand complex things—and make better decisions.

This is a home for work at different stages, from published frameworks to small experiments. My professional work includes projects through OPL Advisory. This collection also makes room for interests that reach beyond it.

Where work involves other organisations, the project notes identify their contribution. Each project’s own site is the place to check its sources, limitations and terms of use.

What the project stages mean

Published framework — a documented method with a public release. Publication is not proof of independent validation.

Working prototype — something you can try while its approach is being tested.

Live experiment — a working tool or experience that may continue to change.

Working note / In development — an idea or output still being prepared for wider use.

Use first. Contribute if you wish.

Something worth adding?

Each project has one question I’m exploring. A correction, concrete example or different perspective is welcome. A few sentences is plenty.

Open a project’s notes to find its existing feedback route, where available. You can also find me on LinkedIn. Exploring the work carries no obligation to review it, and I may not be able to reply individually.
